Crown House

Set within a steep, forested hillside in North Vancouver, Crown House is conceived as a private retreat with commanding views eastward to Mount Seymour and, on clear days, across the Fraser Valley to Mount Baker. The sharp grade and limited approach required a house that could anchor firmly into the hillside while still opening outward to capture distant panoramas. The design response was to treat the base as a concrete plinth carved into the hillside, from which the main floor mass cantilevers outward as a crown. A continuous east–west skylight organizes the plan, cutting through the house with daylight while guiding arrival and circulation.

The skylight solves two key challenges: it creates a ceiling break, allowing the entry and subsequently the driveway to lift gently, while simultaneously unlocking greater ceiling heights in the living spaces. The main floor cantilevers outward as a crown, with a projecting deck and sloped eave that frame the panorama. Inside, a corner-sliding glass wall dissolves enclosure in the living room, while hidden doors to the study and powder room preserve clarity. Terraced retaining walls extend the architecture into the slope, with planting that integrates the house back into its wooded setting.

Material expression emphasizes weight and shadow: concrete grounds the form, darkened surfaces merge with the forest backdrop, and glass opens the house to distant horizons. Inside, warm wood and pale surfaces soften the atmosphere without diminishing its gravity. Crown House emerges as an architecture of mass and darkness, anchored to its hillside and receding into the trees, where shadow becomes both structure and shelter.
